Day #212: Girl Talk

The Story:

Greg looked quizzically at his girlfriend Valerie. It seemed he was destined to be in a perpetual state of confusion tonight. Somehow, in the hour and a half Valerie had spent with her girlfriend Christie, the two women had discussed, and from the sounds of it to some depth, topics that ranged from past relationships, parenting styles, proper interviewing techniques, God, reflooring a bedroom, holiday plans, vanishing furniture, counseling, karma, graduate school, book clubs, and several other topics (Greg had stopped listening at this point, completely overwhelmed by the sheer volume of subject matter).

“Greg? Greg, are you even listening to me?” Valerie nudged her boyfriend who seemed to have gone into some kind of catatonic state halfway through her retelling of Christie’s ideas on ‘fate’. The glazed look slowly seeped out of Greg’s eyes and he eventually reemerged from his ‘zone out’. Blinking his eyes for several moments, Greg looked around the room and then, focusing on Valerie, managed to mumble something that sounded like “whaaa?”.

Realizing this semblance of an answer wasn’t going to cut it, Greg continued. “Sorry honey; just got a little overwhelmed,” he said, shaking his head as if trying to dislodge water from his ears. “I’m still trying to wrap my head around the idea that you girls managed to talk about so much in less than two hours and not only that, you were both able to order and eat and entire meal in the intermediate. Stunning… ” Greg looked like he needed to lie down.

Valerie tried to suppress a giggle and gave her baffled boyfriend a hug. “It’s really no big deal, babe. It’s just girl talk”.

Now... on to world peace. Think we can knock that out before dessert?

The Not So Fantastic Reality:

The above story was inspired by the following tidbits I encountered today:

ONE:      You know what “third Thursday” means? In the world of Sam it means I get to try a new eatery, café or restaurant with one of my closest girlfriends, Joanna. After reconnecting almost a year ago after too long of a lapse in seeing one another, Joanna and I decided to create a standing date, just to make sure our busy schedules didn’t get in the way of staying connected on a regular basis. And so, Third Thursday was born. And, I gotta tell ya, I need this day. As a chick who lives with three boys (le boyfriend, and two boy dogs) and who doesn’t have many (local) close girlfriends, by the time my date with Joanna rolls around I am in desperate need of some girl time (and vino… but that should go without saying when referring to girl time, right?). So after a lovely evening and some delish food (and blackberry sangria… um… YUM!) I did a mental review of all the things we chatted about and was pretty amazed. In the two hours we shared, Jo and I pretty much covered every topic you can think of, from Aardvark to Zounds!… while still managing to house a lovely vanilla bean crème brulee. I love that about getting together with certain girlfriends, the ability to just talk, and know that what you’re saying is being heard, and not just that but they probably have a similar antidote they can throw back your way. Smashing. Somehow, I doubt most menfolk have this same gift of gab and if they were to eavesdrop on some of our conversations, I dare say they would probably be complete overwhelmed. See you next month, Jo!

  1. Ohh how I totally love this 🙂 Yes, third Thursday is indeed a night that I look forward to every month! And what’s even more exciting is next month we get a third Thursday and a Saturday with the boys. And if they get overwhelmed, they can have boy talk 🙂
